Veteran filmmaker Fernando Pérez brings a sympathetic observational eye to this portrait of lives in limbo. Here the old-fashioned tale of a dying gay man and his surrogate family of friends, neighbours and loved ones is transformed into a touching celebration of love, devotion and stoical endurance in which individual struggles reflect a wider picture of Cuban society. This film is a visceral and immediate depiction of modern-day Cuba that isn’t afraid to face the contradictions. The film bridged the gap between fact and fiction, documentary and feature, to deliver a complex portrait of the country. It was rewarded the Audience Award as well as Best Iberoamerican Film at Film Festival of Malaga 2017.
