Programme: GOING BACK TO THE GOLDEN AGE. Portraying Spanish masters on the canvas in motion

DIR: Víctor Erice
Documentary, Biography, Drama
1992 / Spain / 134 min
OV. Spanish with English subtitles

In 1990, Víctor Erice filmed Antonio López while he painted a quince tree in the garden of his Madrid studio. In his quest for realism, the artist was working against time. The fruits that his brushstrokes captured on canvas reflect the light of successive seasons, but also grew day by day bending the branches under their weight. The film itself is an artistic exercise that attempts to capture another: the one conducted by the painter in his struggle against the elements to truthfully represent what he sees and feels at the sight of that quince tree

A 4k digitization was carried out in 2017 under the supervision of the director himself, and in which a few changes to the original cut were done bringing a new version of the film 5 minutes shorter.
