The fascinating true story of a Spanish lesbian couple who tricked a priest into marrying them in Spain 1901

Isabel Coixet’s romantic drama about Spain’s first same-sex marriage in 1901 bowed in competition in Berlin. Based on true events about the first same-sex marriage in Spain, Isabel Coixet’s film makes use of black-and-white images and letters for her modest but deeply empathetic rendition of the story of Elisa Sánchez Loriga and Marcela Gracia Ibeas, who tied the knot in the church of San Jorge in A Coruña, Spain in 1901. An incredible ode to passion, dignity, and resistance.

Since Marcela and Elisa met in their high school years, they developed a true romantic relationship. However, the deeply conservative status of Spain separated them for years until after a touching reencounter in which the two women decided to spend the rest of their days together. To do so, however, Elisa and Marcela will have to lie to their families, deceive the Church, and keep their entire romantic lives in secret, being constantly exposed to great dangers.
